Origin and history

The Beefsteak Club, which now has premises at 9 Irving Street in London, was founded in 1876. When it was founded as the successor to the Sublime Society, its members hoped to rent the society's dining room in the Lyceum. The clubhouse became an essential after-theater club for playwrights, performers, theater managers and writers.

Features of the club

Two special features of the club were and are that all members and guests sit together at a long table and that the club steward and the waiters are traditionally all addressed as "Charles".
